Reflection 3: What's on Telly?—Exploring International Televison

They say to really get to know a culture, you must spend some time inside of it. But if travel's not possible, a country's television shows can tell you a surprising amount about its culture. What a people find funny, what they find thrilling, what kinds of stories engage them can all be found in a country's television shows.

Luckily for us, foreign TV shows are more available in America now than ever before. Now, most major services feature a plethora of international programing, including Korean soaps and Scandinavian procedurals. For this reflection, watch at least one episode from two different countries* on either Netflix, Prime Video, or Hulu.** In your analysis, examine the differences and similarities between our countries’ entertainment, such as tone, language, subject matter, and humor.

Also, your episodes may be in non-American English (e.g. Canadian or British), but you are highly encouraged to watch something in a language you don't understand—via subtitles, of course.

*Broadcasting standards in these countries are different than those in the US, so you may find more profanity, violence, even nudity, in these shows.

**Of the three major streaming services, only Hulu offers a free tier. If none of these is an option, YouTube is another helpful choice. Contact me if you cannot access any of these services.
